Ben Horowitz, the eponymous co-founder of elite early-stage VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, is a peculiar character in the otherwise soft-spoken world of Venture Capital.

Well-known for his love of rap, Horowitz is often seen in pictures next to famous hip hop artists. His New York Times Bestseller The Hard Thing About Hard Things is frequently quoted by successful entrepreneurs as their inspiration sources.

Horowitz knows how to get to the point. His LinkedIn profile humorously reads: “Horowitz at Andreessen Horowitz.” What else is there to say?

This ability to tell a compelling story concisely is a quality he sees lacking in many startup Founders. a16z, as his firm is called (there are 16 letters between the A of Andreessen and the Z of Horowitz), sees some of the best entrepreneurs out there. Yet, many focus on the product rather than the company. Asked why their company exists and about their vision, these Founders fail to produce a compelling story that will convince VCs but also future employees and potential clients.

Putting the company into motion, as Horowitz puts it, means that your vision as a Founder gets translated into the world by leading others to join it. Effective story-telling makes people want to jump on the train.
