Not many people know this, but Instagram started as a Foursquare-like app.
Intrigued by the fact that his app was not catching with the wider public, founder Kevin Systrom took a close look at how users were in fact most interested with the photo-sharing feature.
He and fellow developer Mike Krieger kept making the app simpler, later pivoting the initially-named Burbn* to Instagram. And the rest is history.
The lesson here:
– listen to your customers, even when they don’t talk to you
– simplify, simplify, simplify
– focus on one task and nail it
